Martha McClellan, Winemaker
“The cooler and dry growing season of 2011 produced a later than usual harvest, allowing the vineyard to achieve optimum ripeness. The 2011 Checkerboard showcases the rich concentration of our hillside vineyards. There is a lovely finesse to the wine, a complexity of ripe red fruits, spice and dried currants. The underlying power intensifies the mid palate, providing a background of layers that linger far into the finish for a smooth, balance finale. We allowed this wine to age a bit longer in barrel, contributing to the silky texture and well-integrated tannins. It is a wine that brings great enjoyment, with and without extended cellaring.”
