Bordeaux Futures 2022

Throughout the En Primeur week in April 2023, and from chateaux to chateaux, there was a consistent theme regarding the growing season of the 2022 vintage... hot and dry!  Despite that, what we have been seeing and tasting in the glass doesn't seem to match what mother nature dished out.  No one can quite explain it, but most believe that the maturity of the vines helped them to acclimate to the conditions and ultimately thrive. In general, the vintage  beams with freshness and exhibits perfect balance. About the only bad news with respect to this vintage is with respect to low yields (particularly on the left bank). Some producers described production being down by 40% year on year. That said, the smaller berries produced near perfect concentration and great tannin structure.  Alcohol levels mostly in the lower 14% range and pH teetering around 3.3-3.5.  I was excited to get this opportunity to see first hand how amazing these wines turned out and to see the excruciating blood, sweat, and tears the entire chateau teams put into the vineyard and cellar, pay off with a vintage in the words of  Haut-Bailly, "Prophetique!"  We heard from many of the winemakers that they choose a softer, more hands off approach in the vat room with minimal to no pumping over, pushing down the caps, lower fermenting temps, and an overall, slower gentler extraction.  We saw pictures just before the harvest at many of the chateaux and the leaves were healthy and green compared to the surrounding vegetation.  The mature vines have been adapting to the changing environment and this vintage is the perfect example to showcase what we have been hearing throughout the week.  I am excited for 2022!
