"White pear, sage, mango and citrus set the tone for this vibrant and juicy vintage of Le Petit Cheval. A touch of fennel and aniseed bitterness on the finish contrasts with a lovely density through the mid palate, and the whole thing is given lift, salinity and spice from waves of subtle oyster shell, lime zest and ginger. Lingering finish, great quality. Very few Bordeaux whites have this kind of long barrel ageing on lees, 10% new oak, spread across a mix of 600l demi-muids for 20% of the volume and the rest in larger oak casks in a range of sizes. Estate director Pierre-Olivier Clouet."

“The 2021 Le Petit Cheval is fabulous. A parcel of Cabernet Sauvignon typically used for the Grand Vin gives the 2021 its core of dark fruit. Heady and explosive in the glass, the 2021 offers up a spellbinding array of dark fruit rose petal, mocha, incense and licorice. All the elements meld together so effortlessly. The 2021 is a dazzling Petit Cheval. That’s all there is to it.”

“Gorgeous intensity of aromas on the nose, blackcurrant, black cherry, cinnamon, all spice – exoticism as well as soft florality. Smooth on the palate, silky, satin-like tannins just coat the mouth so delicately but providing the structure and support for the fruit which is strawberry, red cherry and plum focused with high acidity giving brightens and vibrancy. This needs a little more time to soften and expand but there’s a lovely intensity and precision to this, I love the texture of the fruit and the cooling aspects that abound on the finish. It has a succulence and sense of joy showing the skill of winemaker Pierre-Olivier Clouet. Drinking Window: 2026 – 2036.”
