From the Winery: "At Ovid Napa Valley, experimentation in grape growing and wine- making reflects our ethos – to learn more about the land and what will make the very best wine. We conduct formal experiments on specific topics and participate in a variety of academic and applied studies. And we sometimes try things several ways just to indulge our curiosity and to challenge what we know to be possible in the vineyard and the winery.
Our Experiment wines are a product of this process. Each vintage, we offer small amounts of different wines that we believe will be of special interest to you, allowing you to taste and experience new aspects of our vineyard and winemaking."
From the Winemaker: "Seeking an external frame of reference to reshape ideas and inspire new ones, we purchased a small amount of fruit from a neighboring vineyard. Working with our colleague, we learned the why and how of their site and studied everything from the soil and rootstock to row orientation and trellis setup. Their different approach allowed us to learn and improve upon what we do here at the estate.
The production of this exploration, 2020 Experiment N5.0, is our fifth vintage from this series. Cabernet Sauvignon reveals its true depth in this wine. Enticing notes of fresh blueberry, boysenberry and blackberry bramble meld with camphor, forest floor, fresh pine bow and nutmeg. Decadent and saturating, this undeniably delicious wine will delight for years to come." ~Austin Peterson Winemaker
About Ovid: "Located on the famed Pritchard Hill in St. Helena, Ovid was founded by husband and wife, Mark Nelson and Dana Johnson. They chose the name as a reference to a Roman Poet of the same name who lived around 2000 years ago and find ways to incorporate his works into the winery’s marketing and branding efforts. Pritchard Hill is located on the eastern side of Oakville and is one of the rockiest parts of Napa perfect for growing the Bordeaux varieties that the producer is known for.
The winery has been set up for success since the beginning thanks to its “dream team” including Vineyard Manager David Abreu from Abreu Vineyards and Founding Winemaker Andy Erickson, previously from Screaming Eagle, Harlan, and Staglin. Most recently, Ovid was sold to the owners of Silver Oak Cellars and Twomey wineries, the Duncan family."
